Dr. Benishek Comments on President’s State of the Union Address

Feb 12, 2013 Issues: Congressional Issues, Economy and Jobs

WASHINGTON, DC:  Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today released the following statement after President Obama delivered his annual State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress:

“I valued hearing President Obama’s ideas for the American people tonight.  I want to work with the president and find common ground, but what Mr. Obama outlined this evening was simply more spending, more borrowing, and more tax increases.

During his first term, the president tried to improve the economy by spending trillions of dollars we don’t have on failed stimulus plans and new government programs.  This approach has not worked.  The economy is stuck in a rut and the national debt has grown by over 50 percent in just four years.  Instead of more wasteful Washington spending, let’s get the federal government out of the way so this economy can start growing again.

Right now, moms and dads in Northern Michigan are finding it difficult to pay their bills and provide for their families—while the cost of food, gas and utility bills continues to go up.  We have to do better than that.  Washington needs to stop fighting and work together to find solutions that grow the economy, help families who are struggling to get by, and give our children a shot at a better future.”
